What is ear candling?
The ear candling treatment (a.k.a. coning, candling or ear coning), is a therapeutic therapy to promote ear health. The age-old remedy works to relieve both pain and discomfort and may assist in the body’s natural process to excrete impacted or infected ear wax during the days after the candling is performed.
How it works:
One end of a cylinder or cone of waxed cloth is lit, and the other is placed into the patient’s ear. The flame is cut back occasionally with scissors and extinguished between five and ten centimeters (two to four inches) from the subject.
The subject is lying on one side with the treated ear uppermost and the candle vertical. The candle can be stuck through a paper plate or aluminium pie tin to protect against any hot wax or ash falling onto the subject. Another way to perform ear candling involves the subject lying face up with the ear candle extending out to the side with a forty-five-degree upward slant. A dish of water is placed next to the subject under the ear candle.
The flame creates negative pressure that draws the wax and debris out of the ear canal. An ear candling session can last up to one hour at which time one or two candles may be burned for each ear.
Ear candle users often report successful treatment of the following common conditions:
- Sinusitis (and other sinus problems)
- T.M.J. Pain
- Ear Aches
- Swimmer’s Ear
