Chiropractic Myths Busted: Honest Answers to the Questions That Keep Bucks County Patients From Getting Help

If you've been living with back pain, neck stiffness, headaches, or sciatica and haven't yet tried chiropractic care, there's a good chance a nagging question โ€” or three โ€” is holding you back.

I hear them every week here at our Morrisville office. Patients come in and, almost apologetically, admit they almost didn't call because they'd heard something that made them nervous. I get it. There's a lot of misinformation floating around about what chiropractors actually do, who it's for, and whether it's safe.

So let's clear the air. Below, I'm tackling the most common chiropractic myths head-on โ€” with straight talk, not sales pitches.

---

Myth #1: "Chiropractic Isn't Safe"

**The Truth:** Chiropractic care is one of the safest forms of healthcare available for musculoskeletal conditions.

This is probably the biggest myth of all, and it's worth spending a moment on the actual data. According to research published in *Spine* and reviewed by the American Chiropractic Association, serious adverse events from spinal manipulation are extraordinarily rare โ€” estimated at fewer than 1 in 1 million adjustments. To put that in perspective, the risk of a serious complication from taking a common over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen long-term is significantly higher.

Before any adjustment is ever performed in our Morrisville office, we conduct a thorough health history and physical evaluation. If imaging is needed, we'll refer you for it. If chiropractic isn't the right fit for what you're dealing with, I'll tell you that directly and refer you to the appropriate provider. Your safety always comes first.

**The short version:** Chiropractic has a decades-long safety record backed by research. The cracking sound you hear isn't bones breaking โ€” it's simply gas releasing from the joint space.

Myth #2: "Once You Start Going to a Chiropractor, You Have to Go Forever"

**The Truth:** You are always in control of your care. Full stop.

This myth likely comes from the fact that some patients *choose* to continue with regular wellness visits after their initial pain is resolved โ€” because they feel better and want to stay that way. But that's a personal choice, not a requirement.

Here's how care typically works in our practice:

  • **Phase 1 โ€“ Relief Care:** We focus on reducing your pain and inflammation. This is the most frequent phase of visits.
  • **Phase 2 โ€“ Corrective Care:** We work on the underlying structural issues that caused the problem. Visits become less frequent.
  • **Phase 3 โ€“ Wellness/Maintenance Care:** Optional. Many patients choose periodic visits to maintain their progress, much like regular dental cleanings.

You can stop at any phase. Many patients come in for a specific injury โ€” a car accident, a sports strain, a flare-up of sciatica โ€” get the relief they need, and move on. Others find that monthly maintenance visits help them stay active and avoid future flare-ups. The choice is entirely yours.

**The short version:** No reputable chiropractor will pressure you into a lifetime commitment. We create a plan, you decide how far you want to take it.

Myth #3: "Kids Shouldn't Get Adjusted โ€” It's Too Rough"

**The Truth:** Pediatric chiropractic adjustments are gentle, safe, and nothing like adult adjustments.

Parents are often surprised to learn that children can benefit enormously from chiropractic care โ€” and even more surprised when they see how gentle the techniques are. Adjustments for infants and young children use light fingertip pressure, no more forceful than you'd use to test the ripeness of a tomato.

Children's spines go through a lot. Birth itself can place significant stress on the cervical spine. Then come the tumbles of learning to walk, the backpack loads of school, sports impacts, and hours hunched over tablets and phones. Pediatric chiropractic can help with:

  • Colic and feeding difficulties in infants
  • Ear infections (recurrent)
  • Growing pains
  • Postural issues from screen time
  • Sports injuries
  • Headaches in school-age children

Here in Bucks County, we see families from Morrisville, Yardley, Newtown, and surrounding areas who bring their kids in as part of a whole-family wellness approach. Some of my youngest patients are just a few weeks old.

**The short version:** Pediatric chiropractic is adapted specifically for children's developing bodies. It's gentle, effective, and increasingly recommended by pediatric health professionals.

Myth #4: "Chiropractors Only Treat Back Pain"

**The Truth:** Chiropractic care addresses the entire neuromusculoskeletal system โ€” not just your lower back.

While back pain is certainly one of the most common reasons people seek chiropractic care, it's far from the only one. We regularly help patients with:

  • **Neck pain and stiffness** โ€” especially common with desk work and driving
  • **Headaches and migraines** โ€” many of which originate from tension in the cervical spine
  • **Sciatica** โ€” shooting pain down the leg caused by nerve compression
  • **Shoulder, hip, and knee pain** โ€” often related to postural imbalances
  • **Auto accident injuries** โ€” including whiplash
  • **Sports injuries** โ€” sprains, strains, and repetitive stress
  • **Prenatal discomfort** โ€” pelvic and low back pain during pregnancy

The spine houses and protects your spinal cord, which is the communication highway between your brain and your body. When spinal alignment is off, it can affect far more than just your back.

**The short version:** If it involves your muscles, joints, or nerves, chiropractic care may be able to help.

Myth #5: "Chiropractic Care Is Expensive and Insurance Won't Cover It"

**The Truth:** Many insurance plans do cover chiropractic care, and it's often more cost-effective than the alternatives.

Most major health insurance plans โ€” including Medicare and many employer-sponsored plans โ€” cover chiropractic visits, at least in part. We encourage patients to call our Morrisville office before their first visit so we can help verify their benefits.

For those without insurance coverage, we offer affordable self-pay options. Consider this: the average cost of spinal surgery in the United States runs into the tens of thousands of dollars. Chiropractic care, particularly when started early, can often help patients avoid that path entirely.

A 2018 study published in the *Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics* found that patients who received chiropractic care first for low back pain had significantly lower overall healthcare costs compared to those who went straight to medical care.

**The short version:** Check your benefits โ€” you may be covered. And even without insurance, chiropractic is one of the most cost-effective investments you can make in your health.

Myth #6: "I'll Have to Get X-Rays Every Time I Come In"

**The Truth:** X-rays are only taken when clinically necessary.

We don't take X-rays as a routine sales tool or to run up your bill. Imaging is recommended when there is a clinical reason โ€” such as a history of trauma, osteoporosis risk, or when the physical exam findings suggest we need more information before adjusting.

Many patients are treated effectively without ever needing X-rays. When they are needed, we explain exactly why and what we're looking for.

**The short version:** X-rays happen when there's a good reason. We follow evidence-based guidelines, not billing incentives.

Myth #7: "Chiropractic Is Just Cracking Backs โ€” It's Not Real Medicine"

**The Truth:** Chiropractors are licensed doctors who complete rigorous graduate-level training.

To become a Doctor of Chiropractic, students complete a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory, and clinical training โ€” comparable to medical school in terms of total hours. The curriculum includes anatomy, physiology, neurology, orthopedics, radiology, nutrition, and clinical diagnosis.

Chiropractors are licensed in all 50 states and regulated by state boards. We are trained to diagnose conditions, order imaging, and co-manage care with medical doctors, physical therapists, and other providers.

The "cracking" you hear during an adjustment is called cavitation โ€” it's the release of gas bubbles within the synovial fluid of the joint. It's harmless, and honestly, most patients find it satisfying.

**The short version:** Chiropractic is a legitimate, evidence-informed healthcare profession. The "just cracking backs" description undersells it considerably.

---

Myth #8: "Chiropractic Won't Help If I've Already Had Surgery"

**The Truth:** Post-surgical patients can often benefit from chiropractic care โ€” with appropriate precautions.

If you've had spinal surgery, chiropractic care isn't necessarily off the table. In many cases, gentle techniques can help with the segments above and below a fusion, address compensatory patterns that develop after surgery, and support overall recovery and mobility.

We always review surgical history thoroughly and coordinate with your surgical team when appropriate. There are situations where certain techniques would be modified or avoided entirely โ€” and we'll be upfront about that.

**The short version:** Prior surgery doesn't automatically exclude you from chiropractic care. A thorough evaluation will determine what's appropriate for your specific situation.
